I would start by blowing all your fuel pipes clean with an airline first and then change the fuel filter, make sure filter is full when engine is running. If it has sucked up crap this may solve it.

If it's Pre 59 which it will be as a series 1 it does not need an MOT but unless your an expert it is always worth having someone else check it, I may also have gone green with envy you luck sod you.

Just keep servicing it at regular intervals. As the old saying goes if it ain't broke don't fix it.

This may be obvious but have you checked the intercooler? I also suffered power issues with my RRC 300tdi and after cleaning out the intercooler it is now much better.

Painted all my military Rovers with a roller never had an issue, but I was using Matt paint not gloss.
