    Mark L's D1 300tdi restoration/build thread

I feel my previous D1 which gave its life and donated quite a few bits needs its very slow demise mentioning at this point. This literally took the best part of a year for me to gradually strip it and cut it up.

Another eBay bargain with a good percentage of the purchase price going to the Help for Heroes charity. Double win. And that spare wheel is a bit snug, isn't it...?! However, my obsession with fresh paint meant this simply wouldn't do: One full strip and refurb later. :brushteeth:

    Mark L's D1 300tdi restoration/build thread

With absolutely no idea how old the battery was, it was now getting to the point where it was struggling to start on the cold mornings, so a new one to accompany the winch was in order. Literally the biggest battery you can get in the standard space without modification: A second...

    Mark L's D1 300tdi restoration/build thread

Bargain show price winch from the 2012 Stafford in door 4x4 show. Purchased on the same day I met fellow LZ member Mr. Noisy. Little did we know at this point how involved he'd become in my D1 build. We'll come back to the legend himself later. :tea:

Right, I'm doing precisely jack sh*t today, so time to crack on with the progress of this thread. :D Various bits were refurbished during the suspension lift. Some heavy duty steering bars & adjustable panhard rod got caught up in the painting frenzy too. :) We'll come back...

    Boooost gauge

I honestly can't remember the exact sizes, as it's been a while since I carried out the mod. Def go for short IF you can get it. At the time I bought mine, they did a long and a short version but then switched to a medium version only due to manufacturing costs etc.

    Boooost gauge

Mine isn't 90 degrees but I'd recommend it as it is a bit tight between the inlet manifold and the bulk head. One of these: http://bit.ly/VKNdfW That screws into one of these: http://bit.ly/QM9JcJ Better to ring Demon Tweeks though to make sure you get the right size as they do vary.

Also check the dust shield of the output flange on the transfer box. Mine was rattling to buggery before it got replaced.

    Catagory D insurance?

Damn glad I opened this thread and read that comment. I'm actively looking for a VW Polo Bluemotion as a work hack and the vehicles I've been looking at are Cat D as they're significantly cheaper. I was actually going to look at one in London the weekend. Just rang my insurance company for a...

    Boooost gauge

That's exactly where I fitted mine. Zero drilling or cutting of pipes required. I bought the required brass plug and boost pipe adapter from Demon Tweeks.

    Need replacement chrome swivel balls!

If you go off road in it, avoid those stinking, f*****g teflon coated swivel balls like the bubonic plague... I'm one of three people in my circle of friends alone who have shattered them into a number of pieces whilst driving off road. My vehicle whilst in Morocco: Another vehicle on...

    Rear door replacement

Dead easy. Two man job though as they are HEAVY. Just a case of taking the 6 bolts that hold it in place and removing the circlip that holds the bottom runner in place. Oh, and you'll need to unplug the loom from within the door itself which is probably the most time consuming part of the...
