Freelander 1 New-to-me FL1 TD4 2006 - smoke on startup and doesn't get up to temp

Try running it with the air filter cover removed. That way crankcase fumes cannot get in to the inlet. Also try running with disconnected EGR & intercooler hoses. That way you can eliminate turbo seals leaking. Basically your dividing the inlet path into sections to eliminate possible causes.

Outside air >> Air filter >> MAF+IAT >> Turbo >> Intercooler >> EGR >> Inlet Manifold >> Cylinders.

Three places for oil to get in: Crank Breather, Turbo, EGR.

We went through the same stuff, so after cleaning the intercooler & pipework, plus a new crankcase breather, we confirmed no smoke from the turbo (therefore seals ok). It ultimately became obvious our issue was probably worn or leaky injector insides.

Thank you - I will definitely do that. I think I will post a diagram up to confirm I'm checking the right things before I start...
 
I wondered if anyone has any thoughts on how many injectors I should change, based on the readouts and the leak off test? I’m thinking definitely 4 and potentially 1 too… trying to refrain from throwing too much money at parts given its overall value 🙈

I think removal and cleaning of injectors would be a reasonable (and cost effective) stage one to try and address the problem, even if it requires buying a cheap sonic cleaner. If that didn’t work, I’d go to stage two and buy a known ‘good’ injector from someone (here) and replace each with it, one by one, noting any improvements.
Along with trying to isolate that potential oil burning issue.

Of course, all this requires time and tools and space… the OP may understandably opt to get a local Indy to do the work.
