Yes, the roof racks fit to the gutter as this is where the strength is ....
Your picture (of the mounting clamps) looks entirely wrong.
I would not reccommend that you drill the gutter, that is a recipe for disaster ..
Not my car, just an eample of the style of clamps you need.

Agree there should be clamps to attach to the gutters, no drilling involved.

It does indeed require gutter clamps.
There may be further images on my hard drive, i'll check after work and get back to you.

That's similar to how I remember my brownchurch rack fitted.
Looking at the OPs photo there doesn't appear to be anything on the legs to attach the gutter clamp part to?

That is going to by my comment. The clamps are available to buy (LINK first hit on google) but when I needed some for mine i contact brown church direct and ordered from them. but this looks to be missing the mount on the roof rack leg for the lamp to bolt through. I believe some early series roof racks bolted directly to the gutter but that is not something I would want.
There were two types of mounting on Brownchurch racks. One was the clamp type, which has a small section of tube welded to the outside of the leg and the other was flat feet with holes which require the gutter to be drilled. You have the latter. If there are no tubes on the legs fpr clamps, you will need to weld some on. Brownchurch still have clamps available. I bought some spares which I have in the garage in case any fail.
