Hi,

We have a leak coming from underneath our defender 90, almost in the centre. Can anybody tell me what this part is and what it could be? It's leaving a small puddle underneath and liquid is orangey colour. Think it's coming from the area circled

Thankyou 😊

Firstly Welcome :).
We would like to see the whole 90 in an Intruduction thread too;).

So how long have you had it?
I will start with a few observations.
The Transfer box plug and sump plate look clean (compared to the rest) so what has been done recently?
Transfer box oil is oil coloured, gearbox oil is redish coloured, well they should be.

So clean it all off and try to track down where the first drips come from. your gearbox looks "dry"
If you are forming a puddle check all your fluid levels.

We haven't even had it a week unfortunately the puddle was as soon as we got it home, small palm sized puddle. Here's a photo of it 🙂

The liquid is a reddish brownish orangey colour. It happens and makes a small puddle after every drive. It's had a lot of work done it came with a list! But unfortunately we aren't mechanically minded 😅

So what on the list suggests oil changes? If anything.
As for being machanically minded you are on a steep learning curve, unless you have deep pockets.

It looks nice, but your pic from earlier shows it needs some loving underneath:), Top is fine for me:).

This is the list.

When we told the previous owner about the leak as soon as we got home, he said it had new seals on transfer box and gearbox when he put clutch in so it'll be excess leaking.

We expected it would've stopped by now. Definitely not got deep pockets unfortunately 😕

He also said its probably atf where he filled gearbox up recently

Second to last line in your second pic.

That gearbox drain hasnt been out ;) show us the diffs.

When you fill a fliud (other than engine) in a land rover its called a fill/level plug and there is usually an oil stain around said plug, because you fill until it dribbles out.

Post some more pics of it underneath. I dont know what you paid for it (doesnt matter to me) I already feel the seller is maybe telling fibs;).
Another thing how long ago was the work done?
You have to learn the basic mechanics if you want to own a LR, but you are in the right place members will talk you through any work you want to undertake.

Classic sign of front output seal fail I would say. Oil flung by the drive flange is blown back on to where it can be seen. This has been happening a fair old time, evidence by the clean strip on the casing.
Check transfer oil level straight away. May already be very low.

Thankyou for your replies and knowledge

We are feeling pretty stupid tbh and I am worried my partner has blown his money and been screwed over. We love this landy already and love the look of it, but getting a problem as soon as its driven home is disheartening

No idea where diffs are fir a photo 🤦‍♀️ this is the only other photo I have of the problem

I wish I knew what all these parts are, but thankyou for the reply! A seal doesn't sound like too much of a job?

The problem is the front seal can be a right tawt as you can replace it and it can leak again and again and again, but you have to start somewhere!

Not a massive job, your biggest issue will be finding any garage that is prepared to work on an old land rover, as the land rovers can be trouble but the biggest issue is the owners, bit like vw/mini/fiat fans they are all the same!

When it comes to fix its this is a basic job.
A prop shaft bolt removal tool and other basic spanners and socket set will be needed Prop bolt tool is a thin neck socket available on ebay/amazon. A kit of parts including a new drive flange can be had for about £30. Often damage to where the seal runs on the flange is the issue when a new seal don't do the job.
Check "how to do videos" on you tube.

They’re not meant to leak, but honestly, that is perfectly normal for a Defender! You’ll soon learn not to park on expensive-looking driveways.

They look like this bulge in the middle of the front and rear axles.
IMG_0940.jpegIMG_0941.jpeg

I changed my oils months ago ;), but it doesn’t make a puddle.

To believe your gearbox and transfer box has been out recently to blame it on an “overfill “ is a bit of a reach tbh from looking at the pics, there doesn’t seem many disturbed nuts n bolts that I would expect.

It’s not the end of the day if it’s solid and you are willing to learn to handle a spanner.
