Thoughts on these wheels, please?

Hello all.

My Dad has a Defender and wants me to ask about these wheels;


Please can I ask for thoughts and what to look out for?

What about them?

For just off road use then yeah great.

Road use lord no, mixed use also no.

If he want's them for road use just Don't.

Silly question (I don’t own a Landy) but why not? Lack of control? Not made for roads?

Any mixed use ones you’d recommend?

They are classed as 80% off road bias but can be driven on the road with care. Don't grip like more road bias tyres, very noisy and increase fuel use.

Look at the tread, how are they going to work on tarmac? Off road only and I bet they have a terrible speed rating.
All terrain are what you want for mixed use.
BFG Mud Terrain also work OK on the road if you mostly do green lanes.

Also check the dot code on any tyres you are buying second hand. This gives you the date of manufacture. I have looked at a couple

Never heard of dot code before….ill get researching……!

The tread pattern. Very loud, very noisy, bad in the wet, bad on tarmac. Just generally awful on the road.

If you want mixed use the any all terrain or something like Toyo MTs.

What is the use of the landy?

As everyone has said - off road only.
Tends to rip the ground up too.
Next to no grip in the wet on tarmac.
Often these are re-treads.

£450 seems a bit expensive.

87mph speed rating, can you imagine what that would be like!

not for road.....you ever tried walking in football boots on pavement? you gonna end up in a ditch....Nuff said.
£450? seems expensive....hope it includes the speakers...

Plenty on ebay from £100 and upwards.

Cheaper tyres are available.

I've been in a Discovery with Insa Turbo Special Tracks fitted and the noise alone was unbearable at anything above about 50mph. Also, traction on road was pretty terrible. The Dakar is a better off-road biased tyre, but still quite noisy. They would be fine for a play truck that gets driven from home to the site, but not much good for general driving around.

I swapped a tired old set of Dakars for Toyo Open Country AT+ tyres, and immediately gained mpg and went from cruising at 60 to 65-70 comfortably. The tread pattern is similar to that latterly fitted to Defenders and is a good all-round compromise tyre.
