P38A BFG's A/T KO2 any good?

It WAS an insane price, hence me being so keen to own them! The two "only just legal" tyres are 19" and a sod to get hold of. I got a set of four used tyres recently for my A8 from a Hull trader fitted, balanced and new valves for £100.00.They are premium tyres, they'd never been punctured and I was chuffed to bits. They're on the lookout for a pair of suitable 19". In the meantime, I'm looking for used Insa Turbos or similar. No spare on P38 as a 90-ltr "doughnut" LPG resides in wheel well. Just sold my A8 this morning, so paramount I get replacements soon. The "friendly copper" I referred to earlier said they're "JUST" legal. All the best. Mike.
 
Just be aware that if you fit 265-70-16 tyres and you drive at the indicated speed limit, your actual speed will be slightly higher than the indicated speed. Jobsworths with speed guns love people who do that.

Or more than likely the speedo will show the correct speed, as pretty every car I've been in, especially newer ones all read over to begin with anyhow.

The new regs from 2001 say the indicated speed can be higher than actual, but the actual cannot be higher than indicated. Pretty simple to understand really. If you fit larger tyres with a greater rolling radius than those specified for the vehicle the speedo WILL read lower than the actual speed. Simple as that. Vehicles made before 2001 are still subject to the plus or minus 10% at an indicated 30 MPH rule. If you want to fit larger than standard tyres to your car and be done for speeding by a jobsworth with a speed gun carry on, no skin off my nose.

Yes and we go over this AGAIN and AGAIN. I'm sure you are deaf!!!!

Most speedo's over read, so when it says you are doing 30mph, you might only be doing 26mph. Fitting bigger tyres may mean when you are doing 30mph it will now say 29 or even 30mph!!!

Pretty simple really.

And can you cite a single court case EVER in the history of the motorcar, where someone was prosecuted for running bigger tyres that altered the speedo. If not, maybe STFU about it. It really causes nobody any harm at all, no babies killed and nobody going hungry because of it. :)
 
I got done doing 33 in a 30 cos I had changed the speedo and forgot it under-read.
Judging by speed registerd on a sat nav, most modern speedos are not that far out, on a 2000 disco 2 about 1 to 2 mph underreading, on wifey's 2004 Pluriel, only 1 mph out. It's OK if you use a sat nav and drive by that, then you can use any tyres you want, law won't test the speedo.
But I did have a friend who got done for a non-working speedo.
His mileage showed the same as on his MOT when he got stopped for a routine check and had to produce his documents!

I gave a genuine warning to a member get over it. Lots of people are done for 1 MPH over the speed limit by jobsworths with speed guns, happens every day. Costs motorists millions a year in fines and stupid speed awareness courses. Vehicles made before 2001 are entitled to be doing between 27 and 33 MPH actual at an indicated 30 MPH. But people don't know that and take the punishment for no reason. Vehicles made in or after 2001 aren't allowed to have an actual speed over indicated, simples. Get real for christ sake. If you want to fit bigger tyres by all means do so, but be aware of the consequences of doing so. :p
 
For the record if you fit 265/70/16s to a D2, assuming your speedo was accurate to begin with, at an indicated 30 mph you will be doing 31.7 mph. As your speedo will have been under reading to begin with, you will be fine. The biggest difference is at an indicated 70 mph where you will be doing 73.9 mph. If like me your D2 is pre-2001 you could drive at an indicated 73 mph and still be less than the allowed 10% - 77 mph. If you are concerned just memorise some simple conversions.
Drive at an indicated 65 and you are doing 70.
56 and you are doing 60.
47 and you are doing 50.
38 and you are doing 40.
29 and you are doing 30.
Do not lose sleep over it.

Yes, most cars I have driven are the same but all had a speedo cable. The P38 derives the speed by averaging the pulses from all 4 ABS sensors. It is remarkably accurate.
 
Fitting tyres with a larger rolling radius also causes the odometer to under read. Another thing the 2001 regs tried to correct. Just to throw another spanner in the works. :D
