I have fitted 5 fan belts in 5000 miles, checked alternator seems to run freely and no bearing wear,no wear on water pump ,I have fitted both widths and they both shredd . Any ideas or experiences ?

Have you checked that all pully's are aligned when viewed rom the side?
Not over tightening the belt, when set right you should be able to twist the belt with your fingers a quarter turn in the centre of it's longest section between pully's

Pic from top needed, is it std def 200 or disco 200? I assume def 200 as you mention both widths?
V belts are amazingly forgiving, so to wreck one you really have to be trying.
I have tried both widths and never liked how the 11.5mm one rode so high in the vee but then I did not like how the 9.5mm one sat so low in the vee!

Thanks for your comments, the vehicle is a Defender 200TDI , I have used in the past both widths of belt and same problem, I am using Gates 6221MC 10x1025 . I have tried to purchase a new pulley for the alternator but difficult to source and new alternator don’t always come with a pulley . Have checked alignment and looks all in line .
