Egr

Hi

I've just bought a 1997 90 300 TDi and keep reading about EGR's. I'm sorry if this has been covered many times, I keep finding conflicting information :-/

Ill get right to the point. Should I leave it in place or blank it off ?

get rid, just stick a tin blank in the pipework, some 300s didn't even have them.

Hi again,

I've just blanked off the egr etc, all went well, I've also removed the centre front seat and fitted a cubby box.
After fitting and putting the seat in the back, I noticed an EGR control unit screwed to the bottom of the seat. Does this still need to be connected although the EGR has been removed ??

Do you still have the stainless flexible pipe or have you binned it? I have a split in my pipe and looking to replace but can't find one anywhere

Fit a blanking plate at ERG flange, as currymunster and timtheenchanteruk says, leave all pipework attached, as it may fail an MOT if it is removed and it should be there according to your build spec ...

The flex exhaust bit ?

The T piece that goes between intercooler and exhaust manifold, the flexible branch goes to the egr valve

I know, I've been quoted £250 but if everyone is taking them off has someone got one going CHEAP?

A missing EGR is supposed to be a MOT fail, you may want to keep it looking like the EGR is still fitted.
I know some didn't have an EGR,
I'm sure your mate's mate's uncle asked his friend who is an MOT tester and he said it's ok,
but if you need to re-install an EGR to pass an MOT, it could work out very expensive.

Its up to you to decide on removing the EGR but be aware of new MOT rules, some inspectors may pass it others will fail it as a Major failure. Either way keep hold of it you may need to replace it, also CAT if fitted. If EGR removed blank any vacuum pipes. I refitted mine and my CAT and have not noticed any difference in performance or economy but exhaust is cleaner.

This is the one that will get you:
8.2.2 Compression ignition engine emissions
8.2.2.1 Exhaust emission control equipment
You only need to check components that are visible and identifiable, such as diesel oxidation catalysts, diesel particulate filters, exhaust gas recirculation valves and selective catalytic reduction valves.

If a diesel particulate filter has clearly been cut open and rewelded, you should reject it unless the vehicle presenter can show evidence that there was a valid reason to cut it open, such as for filter cleaning.

Defect Category

1. Emission control equipment fitted by the manufacturer missing, obviously modified or obviously defective

Major

1. An induction or exhaust leak that could affect emissions levels

Major

1. Evidence that the diesel particulate filter has been tampered with

This is a six year old thread
Anyhoo, mine has passed the MOT twice since I took my EGR off. Keeping the pipe work in case MOT man decides to fail it at dome point.
