Defender upgrades

A genuine 110 county station wagon 1994 with 60k on the clock.

Waxoyled from the beginning it has remained, shed n buried, in a dry garage.

Now I’m retired and it’s time for some sympathetic upgrading.

New shocks and BF Goodriches, they were perished, are on the way from Paddock. Brakes are done too.

But I need an experts wishlist. And since there’s been a multitude of upgrades over the years, from stainless hinges, to drivetrain upgrades, LED lights etc, where the hell do I start ?

Can I be cheeky and ask the good people on this site, to share their wish list ?

What parts, upgrades, would you make essential, without varying too much from the original beauty of the vehicle.

I’m now 71, and I am in a hurry to spend my time more wisely, so I can enjoy the beautiful Defender I bought all those years ago.

Give me a head start guys .....

You realise what you have just done

If it’s solid then standard with minor improvements is the way to go for me.

Why not enjoy as is, a good service and check throughout . Do you want it to go faster? Use on more extreme terrain? A bit of soundproofing won’t go amiss if you’re planning longer trips .our family uses our completely standard 1994 110 every day for all sorts and wouldn’t change for the world.

I think the main thing is use and enjoy it. Spend the money on first class preventative maintenance and use it. Modifications for comfort and usability maybe but they are pretty capable standard. My d1 got all sorts of ‘upgrades’ it didn’t need. The D2 has decent tyres, a snorkel I don’t really ‘need’ and a light bar but that’s it. It makes some things look easier than some of the modified ones do, not all upgrades are actually that.

It looks brilliant as is. Maybe some nice seats and things to improve driver comfort. The Slickshift gear selector has seemed very popular, however, I’m not sure if I should get one as I like the character of the long and jangly gear changes.

I have a smaller steering wheel, a Momo from paddocks and really enjoy it. Nice to have a bit more elbow space.

The above post hits the nail on the head. Most of my upgrades are for fun and because I enjoy working on mine. I have a dream Defender in mind and am slowly working towards it, but i love it as it is. So drive it and see what you feel you would like.

Drive it for a while, decide what you want of it, then choose just the improvements that are needed.

So my land rover110 is used for a lot of towing, often launching and recovering boats.
So it's got
Galvanised bulkhead, chassis and doors
Stainless exhaust,
An LSD in the back axle for pulling up boats on wet and slippery slipways.
Adding a 200tdi for power helped..
This years improvement will be a front towball ball for easier manoeuvring of loaded boat trailers in a crowded car park.

Additionally I've put in a lot of sound proofing as I like it peaceful..

As like me you are getting on a bit, how about one of those clutch servos to ease the left leg load.

P.S. I don't need one, yet.
