Which shock absorbers?

My 110 has leaky rear shocks so it's probably time to replace them...and I might as well do all four. But which ones?

The vehicle is not a daily driver, most of it's use is on road, although it does do some laning and pay and play...proper tyres, winch, snorkel etc are all present and correct. It's not has any suspension modifications, and I don't intend to do any either. That said it is ex-RAF (1986 110 Station Wagon) and it does seem to sit quite high to me compared to other vehicles although that may just be in my imagination.

The Britpart standard shocks look almost criminally cheap, and the Super Gaz and Cellular Dynamic shocks look pretty cheap too. Question...would I actually notice any difference at all going for one of these types over and above the standard part? Or is it really trying to just polish a turd in terms of ride etc?

Any thoughts or experiences?

Absolutely nothing wrong with britpart genuine parts shocks.

John craddocks stock 'county' shocks. Steve on sales desk said they supply LR with these county shocks. Not saying it's gospel I don't know but I've got these on the front, britpart on the back and had britpart all round on a disco 2 for 2 years they were fine.

I use mine daily, mostly on road but do mild p&p and will be greenlaning as well.

My D1 was completely fine on the standard britpart shock, will value for money. Fine on the road and well abused on a recent lakes trip with no ill affects.

I have just replaced my shocks with oem Boge versions. Previously fitted were the very very cheap britpart ones. I was only replacing because these had started to leak. They lasted about 5 years of daily use, greenlaning and one trip to Morocco which is what finished them off. When I fitted the britpart ones I was a student so price was the deciding factor but I have no complaints about them. I only fitted oem this time around as I am doing more milage so I am hoping the will last longer. I would happily have fitted the britpart ones again and did seriously consider it.

If you replace all of them just bear in mind you will likely need other parts to do the fronts: turret rings, turrets etc.

I've stuck Terrafirmer's on mine, but I'd probably go for Old Man Emu next time around. Have a steering damper from them and seems much better.

So doing the maths Terrafirma look to be roughly twice the price of the bog standard Britpart. Simple question...is it worth it? Sure, there's a bit of bling which I quite like, is the gas and other benefits worth the extra money?

I've heard bad things about TF. Some good as well but not enough to justify twice the price imo.

How hard are you going off road?

I run standard Armstrong on mine,work fine and cheap enough to replace if damaged. [ the rocks around here are a bit mean]

I have a spare full set of standard Britpart shocks, suitable for a Disco 300 Tdi ... Fronts done about 100 miles, rears done about 500+ miles I changed them for Procomp +5's ..

£25 the set, either collect or arrange courier??? We're moving house, so they might just get weighed in otherwise ..

I run Armstrong's on the series.

But for the price @Paul D is offering I would say that is decision made. The standard britpart perfrom and last well enough for standard use, you only need something better if you have a specific reason.
