Fuel gauge problems

Hi All


Freelander 2 TD4 2010. The fuel gauge is reading erratically, today it suddenly fell from half to empty, and the fuel warning light came on, but we could only squeeze in 37 litres of diesel. After filling to t he brim, it now shows 3/4 full.


Any ideas where to start on fixing this? I guess the sender is the mostly culprit ?

Sender can get snagged internally

Could be a wiring issue - there's a connector in the tank - remove this and crimp with a butt connector instead

Check resistances for both tank senders to see what they are over a variety of tank levels - full, empty etc.

Could be the in tank transfer pump isn't running to transfer fuel across the saddle

Thanks, I will look at that. I did not realise there was a transfer pump - could that explain why filling to the brim only shows as 2/3 full - fuel is moved after filling stops ?


Also, doing some googling, I fond horror stories of the engine shutting down when the fuel guage says empty even when the tank is half full - is that true?!
 
There's a run out of fuel strategy where it induces a misfire of fuel level is low and when it gets to a certain point will stop the engine to save running totally out of fuel and meaning you need to bleed the system which is not easy at the side of the road as you need a manual primer!

It could be a fuel transfer issue but the resistance check of the senders will identify of one side of the tank is full (or empty)
