hi , anybody changed the down pipe on their freelander , mine needs done and I'm thinking of doing it myself is it easy and is there anything i should watch out for . cheers

Its not a difficult job. There are four bolts to the exhaust manifold, two to the sump and three to the catalytic convertor. (assuming 1.8 engine)

The hardest part is if any of the bolts shear as they will have to be drilled out. (tends to happen at the CAT end, but is easy to get too with an electric drill)

Regards,

Steve

Thanks Steve ,sorry forgot to say it`s a 1.8 . Its already been replaced from and including the cat back so hopefully not got any problems with the nuts there , just never fancied doing the downpipe cause i thought there was more chance of shearing a nut at the manifold end !! guess i will give it a go then . Cheers

I changed the down pipe on a DI 2L and what a bee-atch of a job. it took two of us, a lot of oxy-cet heat and the nuts turning a 16th at a time.

Did Tiny's last year (L series) and she needed lots of oxy persuasion and an impact gun to get the bolts undone. :(
Found it easiest from underneath with a couple of extension bars.

Have a crack at it yourself, Kickfit fitter will just use brut force and not brain.

Extension bars and plenty of leverage will do the trick.

I have the SS downpipe from Rimmers £180,

A couple of welds went after a week, mounting bracket and heat shield, I sent it back to them and they repaired the welds, only the heat shield welds came undone again. I ripped the heatshield off in the end. Now have an air scoop under the exhaust.

They want that kinda money just to fit it????
Blimey.

Lots of heat, lots of leverage and some hardcore brute force.
Blast the bolts with some WD40 the night before too ;)
Make sure you have some spare nuts to replace the old rusty items with too!

Best of luck!!!

I replaced mine about a month ago with no probs, just a bit of wd40,not bad for a 99 treg.I bought the whole system for £144 plus vat from onlineautomotive.co.uk.The down pipe with flexy joint is £37- thats right £37 and if like mine the cat was blocked with soot, then a new cat is also £37. Its not stainless but for that price who gives a toss.

when you put it back together, lots of coppaslip on the nuts/bolts before you do them up. maybe helps a little if you've got to take it all apart at anytime. Might not have much of an effect but it only takes seconds and costs nothing
