+1 Rust is the killer on old landies.
200Tdi will run for ever if its serviced, chassis can rust to nothing in 20 years.

Love my 200, all in all shes been a tough old lump. Dont think i would want any other lump now.

I'd have a look for a rebuilt 200 on a galvanised chassis . I did, mine's on 220 odd thousand miles and the engine's still running well. Pity the fuel pump's gone, but you can't have everything!

Got a 200tdi, love it and funnily enough had to drive a 300tdi today for a check drive both sound.

Would say 300 only because there is more of them about with better access to cheaper parts. But I have driven both and would say both are as good as each other.

The whole "which engine question" often comes down to individual preference in the end. Both those engines are great and each have their following. For me it has to be the 200TDI in the end because it just does everything so well with incredible simplicity and durability. If I hadn't decided to scratch the V8 itch then I'd have gone for a 200 in my station wagon any day.

+1, Love my 200 tdi; seems indestructible. When it eventually packs up I will get a straight replacement.

Yes it is! It's funny how time changes things though: After working on the Santana boxes many years ago I really thought that they were the mutt's nuts. Coming back to the whole thing now I realise that they are a bit of a lorry gearbox to use and the R380 is the way to go.200TDi is better with the R380 box though ...

200 every time for me but bearing in mind all these engines are old now and it's better to get a good engine rather than be picky over which model. You've got to keep a close eye on the cooling system with the 300 or you'll be doing your head gasket. The 200 doesn't suffer the same issues.
