Looking at getting a defender Again wanting a truck cab just wanted your thoughts on the 200 tdi engine ?? Or should I try and get the 300 tdi thanks

Both good engines, 300 more refined, 200 tougher, I would worry more about the rest of the car, rust etc

Yeah seen one on a H with 124000 on clock bodywork prity straight and everything else looks good with full mot as well last 90 I had wos just turbo and she wos a great work horse

I'd have a look for a rebuilt 200 on a galvanised chassis . I did, mine's on 220 odd thousand miles and the engine's still running well. Pity the fuel pump's gone, but you can't have everything!

That's what I'm after something simple to look after with out all the electronics wanting it for green laneing and a bit off off roading again the one I'm looking at is up for £3795 there's not that many to chose from theses days

Would say 300 only because there is more of them about with better access to cheaper parts. But I have driven both and would say both are as good as each other.

The whole "which engine question" often comes down to individual preference in the end. Both those engines are great and each have their following. For me it has to be the 200TDI in the end because it just does everything so well with incredible simplicity and durability. If I hadn't decided to scratch the V8 itch then I'd have gone for a 200 in my station wagon any day.

200TDi is better with the R380 box though ... ;):D:D

Yes it is! It's funny how time changes things though: After working on the Santana boxes many years ago I really thought that they were the mutt's nuts. Coming back to the whole thing now I realise that they are a bit of a lorry gearbox to use and the R380 is the way to go.

200 every time for me but bearing in mind all these engines are old now and it's better to get a good engine rather than be picky over which model. You've got to keep a close eye on the cooling system with the 300 or you'll be doing your head gasket. The 200 doesn't suffer the same issues.

Where are you based. I have a genuine 200tdi defender 90 truck cab with I for Williams back. Looking to sell it. I'm based in Devon if you're interested
