Got a 1985 ex mod 90. After previously being well behaved on the road, a year ago it developed serious steering wheel judder between 40 and 50 mph - feckin marvellous in those 50mph zones that are appearing everywhere now! Assuming that the wheels were out of balance we took them to be sorted out but the experts said they couldn't get them quite right as the wheel rims were out of shape (they look pretty damn round to me). We lived with the problem by trying to avoid the speeds when it was worse until the tyres needed replacing.
Along with another set of part worn ex mod tyres we got another set of rims (used). We had them balanced and then fitted them and found no great improvement. I had a crawl underneath and found that one UJ on the front prop was totally shot and the other three all had play in them. AH Ha, problem found I thought. Fitted new ujs to the rear and a new prop shaft on the front (bust the yoke fitting new uj-****!) and tightend up the handbrake drum which was loose (all that shaking I guess). Proudly I took it out onto the road- a dissappointingly mild improvement.
So we thought we would fit a new steering damper. This again improved things but only a little.
We now have a landrover that will go from 0mph to 70mph (on a good day) without a problem. However, when slowing down there is a violent wobble in the 40-30 mph zone.
I cannot detect any play in any of the steering joints.
I cannot detect any play in the swivel housings.
I cannot detect any play in the wheel bearings.

What the Hell is wrong with it? It's shaking my fillings out!
Please, please help! Answers on a postcard!
Cheers! Oooo Top Gear is about to come on!
