P38 Idle problems??

Hey Guys

I had a moan recently regarding my P38 DSE not revving as highly as it should be...

Well I am no wondering if its possible that I have a problem with my clocks.... the tickover shows around 450 - 500rpm which I know its not...

Is there a way of adjusting the rev needle on the clocks?

It certainly isn't 450 to 500 because the engine will cut out below 500 RPM. No adjustment i know of other than via ECU.

strange one. No idea what to do with that then.

Either the rev counter has been messed with (the dash clocks have 100% been out) or its out of calibration I guess.

Or the sensor that provides the signal is giving trouble, or does the rev counter get it's signal from the alternator? Never looked on the P38 but some do. If so could be a duff alternator.

Looked at RAVE about this Keith it says signal comes from ECM at three beats per revolution. But where ECM gets it's signal from it does not say. Some diesels without EDC get theirs from alternator 200/300 TDI for instance. But maybe it comes from crank sensor in this instance. Don't know to be honest.
 
The needle should be on the first mark below 1000rpm, which is actually 750rpm as the tacho doesn't start at 0, it starts at 250rpm.

check the crank sensor mine was cracked and it was idling at 2000 rpm new one about £100:alien:
