It's not the Diff but thanks for your reply and pointing to that thread. Looks like i'll have to try another gearbox in it.

I'm thinking it may be a wheel bearing as if i try and do say 65-70mph and then slow down it rumbles as i stop and then when i try to set off

It's when i accelerate & it stops when i slow down - don't notice it when still.

I have a Freelander 1 - 1.8 petrol - 1999. I have fitted a new clutch.....and all Gearbox bearings (3)........and i've just changed the Transfer box. BUT THE DAMN THING STILL HAS A WHINE on it. It's driving me crackers - 3 major components of the vehicle and it's making the same noise as before...

Hi all, Will a 2004 Transfer box off a 2.0 diesel fit on a 1999 1.8 petrol? I know all gearboxes are different but i just wanted to check the IRD as i have a whine from that area & didn't want to go spending one and a half hundred quid if i could get away with it. The whine/whistle goes louder...
