quick update !! clutch plate stripped to the metal plates. clutch fibers all over. from putting the freelander on the ramp to driving it off 8 hours. ird removed before gearbox. cleaned and lubed release arm. front brakes stripped and cleaned (well might as well the wheels were off) the...

no clutch needed to select gears. gears can be selected with no clutch (while engine is running) there is a small amount of noise (like release bearing)rubbing which disappears when clutch is depressed. can't hear gearbox turning while in gear and engine running.
