    I think you nailed it. After checking with an OBD reader while the car was running, the EGR valve data was off. I wasn't able to check the live data when the car was stalling to confirm, but I'm assuming the valve was stuck open letting too much exhaust gas into the engine, causing it to stall...

    Do you know if a failing crank sensor would show up on a odb reader or is there any other way of checking if it's failed? I know a friend who has a reader so can get that checked.

    Thanks for the advice I will check the belt/bearings and post an update. It might also be sounding worse because the revs are dropping and it's nearly stalling although I think you're right something doesn't sound quite right. Annoying I've only just bought this Freelander after wanting one...
