Cheers.
The bill has ‘gearbox / diff oil’ at £40+vat, could that be it?
We probably won’t be back to the garage that changed the clutch, it went completely while 50 miles away from home but they were recommended by a local who stopped to help...
If they didn't, it would be a good idea to - even if none spilled.
If they do it, warn them to release the fill bolt first as it is really soft and often causes problems if not taken off very carefully.
My wife can hear it too so pretty sure it’s a real sound, just difficult to pinpoint where it’s coming from while driving.
It’s worse at 45-50 mph and doesn’t change if the clutch is pushed in or a gear changed. Over 50 mph is quieter or maybe...
This may sound stupid, but can other people hear this whine? My L Series was making a funny sound. My family could not hear it, 2 garages could not hear it. But the 2nd one I instructed to change the cambelt anyway. End result was a louder...
It sounds like transmission to me - changes with road speed and not present if not moving. It doesn’t sound like the ‘grumble’ of a wheel bearing but I don’t really know. One bearing was totally shot, maybe the other is going?
That’s a very good point about comparing a repair cost to the price of a replacement car rather than the value of the current car.
If we were to change the car if would probably be a Freelander 2, so looking at £5k upwards I guess. Still spent...
Older cars cost more to maintain but virtually zero on depreciation so in the end they are much cheaper to own.
Sometimes (not always. ;)) it's better to stick with the car you know than to buy something totally unknown.
But if you'd decided to buy a car for 3 grand, the clutch could have crapped out in 6 months anyway.
I never understand why people relate the cost of a repair to the value of the car - it needs to be compared to a REPLACEMENT car that's worth...
