I found the 75° one in there, which I guess to be a mini one, so it might well have been wrong type: the new one is much longer. I'll keep an eye on the gauge, although unfortunately the bulb has fallen out at the back of it, so it's difficult to see in the dark.

I have replaced the thermostat with the correct 88° one, finding a 75° in there, seems to explain why it was running cool. On the way home it got almost half way on the temp gauge, so I think I have solved the issue. The water is clear in there, so now I have to get some antifreeze. I also...

The raised intake is now off and it does seem to be running nicely. There are 3 holes in the wing and 5 in the screen post, which I have covered with heavy grease until my new grommets arrive in the post. The only challenge was attaching the new intake grille, for which there were no badge...

Hopefully this is just a funny story I can tell people in the future. I recently got my Defender 110 back on the road, and noticed the temp gauge sits stable about a third of the way, and the heater blows warmish but not enough on these cold mornings. So I changed the thermostat this morning...

These are great insights as I hoped, many thanks to you all. It does seem like I could return to standard with a few holes being the only consequence. I agree if there are holes in the wing it would look bad, but I think I can live with a few small grommets in the windscreen frame as mikescuba...

I should clarify that the 110 is a great expedition vehicle, with excellent off road capability, but if I wanted a specialist off road vehicle for weekend fun (which I don't) I would have a 90. It's just my view.
