Can the ECU be removed completely from wireing without affecting anything like immobiliser/ ignition etc. I want to disconnect both black and red plugs to check and clean them. I know the red one can be but what about the black.

Thanks for that. I did some digging on u tube and saw how to do the xyz switch. There was also a reference saying it maybe the ecu getting oil tracking down the harness into the red connector block and there for shorting out. I checked this yesterday and sure enough it was there. All cleaned...

Yes Henry I tried it manually with no effect. The oil I got out was dark but red sort of colour going in when I changed the filter also around 4 or 5000 miles ago. As for eml lights it seems they have a mind only known to themselves ever since getting the car.

I have a disco td5 auto and the gearbox is playing up. What's happening is it sticks between gears until revs are high, above 4000, then it will go up a gear but with a hell of a bang. I changed the oil and filter about 4 or 5000 miles ago. So I am asking what to look for to repair this fault...
