Thanks very much Chris your spot on, looking at the working area im going to struggle to get in there, its booked into a garage. Apparantly its a common problem on TD5s. Thanks for your help Symo.

Further to my last the starter motor is wet and there is fluid (probably deisel) running down the gearbox housing and dripping onto the drive shaft, I think it maybe piping that sits between the back of the engine and the bulkhead just above the starter motor, really difficult to access.
