Hi all. I have a problem with the above Land Rover, it's an 03 model. I can longer select first gear. The gear stick goes into position easily, whether the clutch is in or out or the engine is running or not. All the other gears select fine. There are no unusual noises coming from the gearbox...

It WAS the coil. The new one I fitted was a dud, so much for NOS... Thanks guys.

I think there's a short somewhere. I've got an electrician coming for a look at it...

It's the second condenser too. How would I know if the coil is faulty?

I also have new coil, HT leads, cap, rotor arm and plugs.

Does anyone have a working Series 3 box in or around London? For a 1980 109 2.25l petrol, if that makes any difference.

It's official. The main bearings in the gearbox are knackered. We're going to try fitting a series 2 box, so I may have to start a new thread... Thanks everybody.

It makes the same sound whatever gear I'm in, so maybe it's the mainshaft bearings. I was just thinking of straining the oil, but it'll have to wait till tomorrow night now. :(

It's not the handbrake. And someone I spoke to on the phone says it can't be clutch bearings as they would most likely only screech like that while it was depressed. I tried the gearbox with the transfer lever in neutral, it rumbles and rattles a bit more than it should, but no screeching. It's...
