Thanks to all for the info guys...I'm sure my D2 (registered April 2001) is amongst the last which has the internals but no linkage
Nice job on that modification Del...if only I had a workshop..! These days it's wheel ramps or axle stands and alot of lugging heavy tools around :( Hmmmm...I...

Is it possible to take the linkage from an old 200 or 300 tdi transfer box..? Or is it a completely different set up on the old models..?

Well I haven't been online for a few days but this thread has become very interesting and informative...it would seem that the general consensus is TC and CDL being the best option...now unfortunately I have to find a new steering box for my D2 :( the first expensive repair needed since I got it...

I stand corrected...that said I'd still have the CDL over the TC...the two together may be advantageous but I think it was a mistake to leave out the CDL in the models like my own 2001...I'm fortunate in that mine has the guts all still there just needing connected...

The CDL locks all four wheels so the only way you'll get wheels spinning is if all four have no traction...if only one wheel has grip then you can crawl out of most situations...that's the beauty of the manual CDL...you engage it before wheels start to spin unlike TC which only kicks in when...

[quote=redhand But if it's removed it won't be fitted..
Yes but as another member kindly informed me you can't 'remove' the TC as it's part of the ABS system...therefore you can only disable it which I don't think would count as 'not being fitted' when it comes MOT time...that said, I am...

Well I had the first opportunity to get the Disco 2 up into the snow the other day and I'm not sure if the TC was working or not...when I put it in positions which ought to have it kicking in I did get a loud ratcheting noise which I assume was the TC trying to work..? but got no light on the...

I notice you have "leccy instead of viscous" ...does that make a huge difference with the fuel consumption..?

Ha ha ha you just mentioned my dream car...Series 1, beautifully restored and ready for another 60 years of doing exactly what it says on the tin ;)
Thanks for all the info...I do understand the way it all works but just worry about the expense if it goes wrong compared with my old 300tdi...

Thanks for that info, and no I wouldn't want to be without the ABS...I've had traction control on 2WD cars and never loathed anything as much...the trouble with TC is it locks the wheels after they start to spin...I've been in many deep mud and peat situations where the centre diff lock just...

Being someone who hates all the modern electronics, if I fit the gear to enable my D2 centre diff, can I remove the TC from the car completely and thus the need for any future repairs..?

Eh? and a D1 with it's rust or a D2 with it's ACE and electric trickery isn't a money pit?
The first of a new design are always going to suffer issues but to call it an awful car is going a bit far! Something that will go places a standard D1 won't yet actually steers properly and is quiet and...

I can only tell you what someone in the business told me, and that is that the Discovery 3 is an awful car which will eat all of your cash...apparently they ironed out all of the problems in the Discovery 4 and it's an excellent car...personally I don't like the look of either so it won't be...
