Hi I have found a decent land rover specialist about 15 miles from home and I thank you for the info re codes and possible causes, I think the only way forward is to have it read by a decent diagnostic reader. I will update this thread with the outcome, once again many thanks.

No He did not have a decent code reader or diagnostics unit

Hi I take that's where you pump the accelerator pedal 5 times with ignition on to prime the pump and the engine light flashes. This does work a bit but pump still noisy

Hi My wife and I live in Northumberland and have a Defender TD5 (2002), it's currently got 157k on the clock. Body work maintained by myself. Having a few problems with fuel or ECU, nor sure which but will post a separate thread hoping you can advise.
