Loosen the earth lead on battery but leave it connected, switch ignition on then off and immediately disconnect the earth lead from battery, then remove the positive lead if you want to remove battery to charge or change battery. That is the way...

Sounds like air might be getting into the fuel line, try bleeding the fuel system using the bleed sequence before starting, likely leak point may be at fuel pump connections. I do not know if the 2.2 bleed sequence is the same as the TD5...
