Thanks for your reply re the bearings which I omitted to mention I had replaced about a year ago. The damper was OK then but was found to be hanging off in November when the car was in for an MOT. I do not do a lot of mileage and would be surprised if they had gone already. Cheers.

I had much the same problem but my damper was just hanging off and on the advice of a local garage I cut mine off with an angle grinder .. the damper outer part is half inch thick steel. However, since then I have the most awful 'growl' noise from the transmission and I am trying to sort this...

On the advice of a local garage I removed the damper of the VCU on my 1999 Freelander, when it became partially dislodged from the rubber mounting. I now think that I have made a big mistake as I now have a very noisy 'growl' from the transmission. The car runs well enough otherwise but I am...
