I have found you need to be quite slow when putting the Od in and out of gear. Keep us informed how you get on with fitting a solenoid.

I'd pull the sender, move the arm and watch the gauge, if it works as it should, then tweak the arm on the sender. If the float is bent up too high they can read lower than they really are as although the float is sitting high, it hasn't dragged...
