Thank you both! I thought it was a shame that a solenoid would write off a starter. Yeah the 19J does take some starting which makes bumping it a tiresome job if on the flat. I assumed the flying lead off it was earth due to the black cover but...

That one. The ring terminal going into the starter itself will spin the engine over if you put a jump Lead onto from the battery. I would favour bump starting if it was not a 19j. My 200tdi takes so little to start that I can get it loving...

Solenoid just a switch , put battery live lead direct to the one coming out of starter or have a couple of heavy duty/ jump flying leads connected to the two lead ends and into cab and join there to engage starter
