Ratty, You Genius !! your succinct reply 'fuel stop solenoid' cleared the diesel fumes from a befuddled brain ... so I went after the solenoid ... Turned out it was a faulty DDS (Digital Diesel Shut-off valve), made up of lots of electronic bits in a plastic unit that sits over the solenoid...
