Thanks for the explanation.
I understand what the layshaft is now, but i don't understand how a worn bearing would create a clicking/ tapping sound which is much louder when slowing with the engine. I would have thought a worn bearing would make a rumbling/whirring noise similar to wheel...

Thanks James, reading through previous post i have seen one mentioning lay shaft bearing. I have searched but can't find what a 'lay shaft' is, the nearest i got was a shaft in the main gearbox. And why would this be quieter when in 4th gear but not the other gears?
Can you give me (or point...

After a recent long drive i have noticed a ticking / tapping when I slow down in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear, especially when using the engine to slow down. It disappears completely when in 4th gear or when the clutch pedal is depressed. I can hear this noise in neutral also but alot quieter and...

Tried that, i have a set of mud type & a set of smoother road tyre, it makes no difference, i still get the squeal.

yep checked.
I've done the checks for viscious coupling, am sure its passsenger side front tyre & it only makes a noise on right hand corners, i dont need to go fast, a mini roundabout at normal slow speed will squeal. I have changed tyres getting same noise ....im stumped....

Had the front axle jacked up two days ago, both front wheels turn freely. Discs are clean, no sign of binding & it is only the tyre that gets warmer after a short run. The rims are all at similar temperature suggesting that the passenger side tyre is scrubbing with the heat caused by friction...

Recently replaced my transfer box (chain & VCU type). The s/h unit had Ep90 in it not Dextron. I have no idea how long it had been in there.
Anybody had experience with wrong oil in T-Box? What problems can i expect?

I have recently changed the transfer box (Borg Warner) on my 1990 RRC the old one had a stretched chain.
Since putting the s/h replacement unit one on (which incidentally was filled with Ep90 when it arrived, now changed back to dextron) i have a tyre squeal (front passenger side) when...

Problem found, i removed centre console and through a old tear in the rubber membrane covering gear levers used a couple of rachet extender bars to listen for noise. It's loudest on the transfer box. S/H unit found & will be changed at the weekend.
One question, will i lose oil from either the...

Nice answer, copied & pasted for future reference.
For what its worth..... look out for a clunk on acceleration from standstill on RRC's with Borg Warner gearbox (after '89 i believe) due to chain slip...mines done 150K and now needs replacing.

Sorry im not the best with terminology, the ball joint in the centre of the A-frame connecting it to the rear axle looks new-ish the rubber cover is clean (compared to the other balljoint rubbers that i not yet changed) with no cracks in the rubber. I have just had someone bouncing on the rear...

Thanks for your suggestions. A-frame bush checked again & looks like it was replaced recently.
Also would Aframe bush cause the fault when -
"IF i drive along in 1st or 2nd gear 2-3000 revs & operate the brake while keeping the accelerator pedal constant i.e put more load on engine &...

I have a 1990 RRC with Nissan Fd35 Diesiel engine.
The fault began on a day out a few months ago in the mountains, when starting off on a steep hill i noticed one load clunk. I changed many things & the fault has just got worse.
I am hearing & feeling through my feet a clunking noise when...
