Hi Landy Dudes picked up a 300tdi starts no prob but revs to 2000 and sits there wont tick over or rev any further ,it had an engine from a p reg disco fitted to an M reg anybody got any idea

check alternator , you get different gearing on alternators , this works your rev counter , Changed my Alternator and the one i put on has a different size pulley wheel thus alters rev counter reading as for power change filters

Check the Clunk isn't coming from the front Diff , lay under Disco and grab prop shaft rock it from side to side there will be a bit of excess backlash, you will hear the clunking from the Diff. Its not that hard a job changing the Diff , take prop shaft off Wheels off take drive shafts out...
