Forgot to mention, you could have a spark that is not strong enough to ignite the fuel, i've seen this before. new plugs and/or leads if they look tired. Does it have an ignition amplifier?

sounds like you have an ignition fault, is there a spark at the plugs? if not then it colud be a number of things; coil, plugs, but most likely culprit is the ecu. You can get the ecu checked by an ECU specialist (do a google search) First thing to do is to check for a spark.

Is it possible to convert a series 3 chassis to coil springs? does anyone sell a conversion kit?

If the sides are ally then how do you join them? Has anyone on the forum done a bobtailed Disco? A step by step guide posted on the forum would be great, we would all find out how easy/hard it would be. If i get time then i might call round to see Guy Smith, he only lives down the road from me...
