sounds to me like the system didn't initially recognise your key and shut your system down. By locking and unlocking the car, you re-primed the system to your key. It could be the battery needs replacing in your key fob (although a message should show up on your dashboard). If you can, carry the...

strangely enough, I've just jumped into the car and the book icon didn't come on at all. On the return journey it did. In answer to your post, no, the display is clear for a couple of seconds before the 'book' icon appears.
