*FIXED* Turner Engineering found the problem. They noticed that I was missing the blanking plate in the skew gear which, when the oil was cold and under very high pressure, would allow it to flow into the cam shaft gallery.

That is really worth a try. I think i put two flasks of oil in, which would be around 8 litres but I couldn't swear to it. I'll put another few litres in and see. I'll be a laughing stock if this works but I won't mind at all.

I agree. Turner Engineering are a great company and they were excellent with ensuring I had the right parts for my engine rebuild. These last two pumps have come from them and I really don't think that the quality of the pump is the problem. If they are breaking then there must be something else...

It doesn't seem to have damaged the drive underneath the injection pump. (Sorry for my lack of correct terms)

There is also wear at the other end. Maybe from when the metal went through the pump gears.

I've checked the spline carefully and there is a chunk missing from the pump end of the driving rod. My guess is that this is the source of the metal in the pump. It isn't easy to see but it is quite a lot that has broken off
