Idle high when up to operating temp, then getting hot. Normal?

I wouldn't lubricate them with anything. I would remove the butterfly and chuck it in the bin. Replace it with a plain butterfly which does not have the over run valve fitted. Not only will you never suffer from this problem again, but you will also remove a significant impediment to airflow

    Alternator bracket woes

Over the years the alternator has moved all over the engine. Mine is on the opposite side to yours on what looks like the most home made, Heath Robinson sort of bracket imaginable. however it has the advantages of being cheap and out of the way of most of the hoses and things. Snag is it comes...

    Alternator bracket woes

The thread will almost certainly be UNC, I'll look in my parts book see if I can find the relevant part No for the "proper" alternator bracket. Which side of the engine does your alternator sit on?

    Full Synthetic?

You could always try the smaller oil companies like Miller's or Penrite. Personally I run mine on Shell Helix bought at my local supermarket, and change it every 2,500 miles. It uses some but I suspect most of it is leaking rather than being burned.

Spend most of my time in France. Empty roads and much nicer bread. Run a 1984 One_Ten station wagon with a V8, some modifications (about 4 sides of A4) but the significant ones include discs all round, vented up front, R380, strengthened LT 230, oil coolers for everything and series 2 rear upper...
