Update: Turned out that the lower timing chain had in fact jumped a cog, thankfully causing no damage to the valves. Myself and my mate fitted in a new lower timing chain and tensioner rail. We set up and double checked the camshaft and crankshaft timing, turning the engine by hand checking...

I've thought about breaking my P38a. Depends how much it's going to cost to replace timing chain and other bits n bobs

Sorry guy's thought I mentioned the rpm sensor on this thread. I did mention it on my power steering thread. Senior moment. However thanks for your input and will check out the timing chains soon.

Had a look on YouTube re timing chain. Could It knock the fip out of time. The rpm at idle is 1000 and wont rev past 2200. I'm wondering why the valves didn't collide with the pistons..

The only fault recorded was 'Rpm sensor comparison not ok'

I've fitted many a timing belt and chains on ohv engines. The range rover looks involved lol.

No hot start or powerbox fitted. 145k miles. Probably due new timing chains

The AA guy thought that the timing chain might have stretched and slipped a cog. Hope he is wrong. Would this show up on diagnostics. If so I'll get it booked in, but don't have time or money to fix this at the moment.

Thanks Wammers, that kind of makes sense. Yes same symptoms as old sensor and new sensor exactly the same dimensions. If I unplug no 4 sensor, do I start the engine and will it damage the BECM? Anyway, thanks for the input so far, much appreciated. Talk about learning curves...thankfully this...
