Unfortunately the oil cooler is generally damaged by removing it. It's a bit like a hollow paint tin lid. It will bend on removal causing it to leak on refitting.

While the IRD is out, it's fairly easy to take the turbo off & inspect it. Certainly easier than with IRD in place. Alternatively the qick check, undo the rubber intake to the turbo, grab the turbine with fingers and see if there's play in the...

Hi, you will always get play when you do that type of static test. I thought the same so took my FL1 turbo to Turbo Technics for 'reconditioning' (because of that play) but when they inspected it they said the fact the impeller hadn't been...

I usually cut a slot in the bumper screws with a cutting disk and unscrew them with a flat blade screwdriver.

Bumper off, wheel arch liner self tapped screws can be a pain, had to drill the heads of mine very carefully as not to get them too hot & melt the thin liner then just the bolts that hold the bumper on. If you haven't cleaned the manifold (&...

If I get it right, you are concerned with a bad turbo needing another ird removal to fix. Worry not then, the turbo can be removed with the ird on. I did it twice.

On my way to work (2.25hr bus journey) I was mulling over this issue. I changed back to the ‘old style’ filter just before the MOT in October(for the same reasons you have) so will be stripping the system down for a good cleaning. Always...

Have you checked the crankcase breather? I converted mine to the 'non filter' modified type but found it let more oil into the intercooler system so reverted back to the serviceable paper filter type. As said best remove the intercooler & all...

Haha I get your concern… but oil outside or inside I don’t want a runaway…or a seized turbo..

I’m assuming it is but until get closer to it and start inspecting in more detail it could be coming from elsewhere.. back to work tomorrow so it will have to wait for now.. Thanks for the reply 👍🏻👍🏻

Does oil comes from the turbo ? The boost pipe that get to the turbo can be broken. Turbo hoses use to have some oil in them, same for the intercooler that accumulate a lot of oil. Not very common to have a broken turbo on the FL1 TD4

Hello Folks. Following my post regards IRD bearing replacement I have finally go the unit out 1. Without killing myself 2. Without damaging IRD. Have a replacement bearing kit with Timken items which I was quite pleased to get. Anyhoo last...

Other diagnostics are available! Have a look through previous threads for recommendation. Some do specific vehicles and some do many vehicles. You'll need one that is able to operate the abs pump. Pscan gets good reviews on here. Quick eBay...

Yes handbrake adjusted as you say.. old school the ‘book’ method has never worked for me.. only locks the brakes even with brand new adjusters..

Handbrake, I've always done it by adjusting so it binds on the drum then back off adjuster slightly. Handbrake passes mot and holds car OK. Not pumping the brake as I found it made no difference. Air can be trapped in abs module which would need...

I fitted 235/55/18, which corrected the speedo error, and looked better IMO.

Having separated the ABS modulator from part of the system there will still be air in the ABS block I guess. When I rebuilt the rear of my TD4 I replaced both the rear brake lines in their entirety. I tried to inject fluid into the modulator...

If the reservoir was allowed to empty, then air will have got into the ABS modulator. The only sure way to get all the air out is to pressure bleed the system, going around the vehicle multiple times. When working on ABS systems, it's pretty...

It’s a week since I last posted about my ‘grumbling’ IRD. Anyhoo on Thursday after I woke up I managed to get under the car and change the IRD oil.. (a mixture of new and old oil from the previous attempt/really poor oil for new that ended up...

If it's FWD, then knowing the reason why it's FWD is helpful. Normally the rear output pinion begins to fail due to overloading by the VCU. At this point removing the propshafts help extend the IRD life, but it's not a permanent fix, just a way...

All the bearings were replaced. Its still carrying the props so that I don't have issues at WOF (MOT) time.

Think I’ve seen a video you made when you went for a test drive.. :-) Kits of fleabay have a mixtures of options which I think are down to what they have in stock/are available etc.. so I guess you didn’t have to replace the pinion bearing in...

I got my bearing, seals and cooler kit from these people... https://www.onestopgearboxshop.com/ Forget which make of bearings came in the kit now. They've been in over 10 years now and going good. Mind you, it had the crown/pinion gear...

I not one to grumble…. Because I don't have to because my IRD is maybe a serial ‘grumbled’… Decided I needed to check the oil as I removed the VCU a couple do three months ago… Anyhoo checked I had the right gear oil.. 75 W 90 GL-5 … hell...
