lol thanks for the replies, new head it is. I do get a little smoke from the exhaust yes, not plumes though. It wasn't too bad stripping the head out the first time, least all the bolts will come out nicely the next time round, and the job will be quicker now i know what to do :)

Reving the engine is fine, get a nice roar and yes, it revs freely. It returns to idle around 800rpm and then hunts again, it doesn't cut out, but it has sounded like it would have on a few occasions if I didn't blip the throttle.

think i've found it, the engine coolant temp sensor (ECT)? has 8TT and 73355 written on it?
