thanks all for your replies - on further investigation I don't think its a motor problem, it's a switch problem, as I have found a little spot in between off and intermittent where the wipers do turn off and park. I have bought new switch, just have to fit it now...

I reckon it is a switch problem, not a motor problem because after jiggling with the switch I found a little place in between "off" and "intermittent" where the wipers did actually stop, and they parked just fine. So I have bought a switch. Looks simple enough to fit (ha ha famous last words!)...
