    Timing

It turned out to be a loose wire in the electronic distributor. It was shorting on the wire each revolution. I tucked it in and it's now working a treat again. Thanks for your help, advice and suggestions.

    Timing

Hello all, any help gratefully received. I have recently replaced my head gasket, fitted new HT leads and an electronic distributor. Checked the valve clearance and timing and all was running really well. After about 10 mile (ish) when decelerating for a junction, something happened and it...

    Noisy clutch

I thought I would come back and let you know that I added the oil to the main gearbox (that was empty :o)...with great difficultly....and it worked a treat. In fact, second gear doesn't pop out nearly as much as it used to. Thank-you all for your help.

I thought I would update you on my progress. At the week-end I: - tightened up the head bolts by about an eighth of a turn (a quarter felt too much). This was about 180 lb/ft (compared to 165 recommended in the manual) - checked the valve clearance (mostly ok - I re-adjusted two to be...

    Noisy clutch

It has always popped out of second gear. I wonder if that's because of the (two small) missing teeth. If that's the worst of it I can live with it for now and leave replacing the gearbox for another day (if I've got away with it). I don't think I've noticed any effects of the missing/broken...

    Noisy clutch

Now looking at the manual, it looks like "Detent spring". Is that the same thing? What do they do and do they need replacing or can I do without it? If it needs replacing, is taking the gearbox off the only way?

    Noisy clutch

I've just realised what I've done, and it's really STUPID....I'm feeling really quite embarrassed. There's me thinking I'm really clever and wondering why no-one else had thought about filling the transmission from the inspection panels...one is the transfer box, the other (I poured 5...

Do you think it's worth just giving each bolt a 1/4 turn then before trying a new head gasket?

    Noisy clutch

Wow, thank-you for all your replies. I was waiting for an email notification and so had presumed no-one had replied! I don't want you to think I'm ungrateful for all your help! From another inspection underneath today the vibrations feel most prominent on the transmission brake. From your...

    Noisy clutch

It was leaking from where the front prop enters the.....output shaft housing (I think).

OK, I'm back. I bought a new compression testing kit and the readings are a lot different. 1 - 132 psi 2 - 142 psi 3 - 150 psi 4 - 155 psi Note: These were taken on a cold engine because I didn't want to drive it too much because of my gearbox/clutch problem I'm presuming the readings...

    Noisy clutch

Hello, looking for any help/advice. The clutch on my Series 3 88" 2.25 petrol has become quite noisy....I'm presuming it's the clutch and not the gears. It has become gradually worse. When stood ticking over it now rattles quite badly. This noise disappears when I put my foot on the clutch. It...

Just a mini update. I tested the compression on the car (that had a new head gasket about 3 months ago) and there was no reading. I think my compression testing kit's no good. I will buy a new one and re-test the Landrover. I'll come back next week-end. Thanks for your help.

Hmmm, you're right, I think I'm going to test the compression on another vehicle to check the compression testing kit is reading accurately.
