Did the Old one have 3 wires? Has the speedo worked at all since you had the new alternator fitted? You could always follow the White and Grey wire from the Tacho!

Raz I got same size on my Disco, and yes you do need to adjust the stops to eliminate them catching the radius arms. Also changed front and rear springs to get them out of the wheel arch as they are taller aswell as wider.
