I have the same problem, my handbrake doesn't seem to operate any of the lights on the dash when applied, and I have driven off with it on once or twice (not had it long!) I have had a good look around and cannot find any electrical connections on the handbrake (mine is a K reg Defender 90 200TDi)

I will look into the CV grease option, someone also told me you can buy rubber boots to go over the ball? It seems like a lot more than 0.10mm play in the wheel bearings but this might be amplified by fact that I am rocking the outside of the wheel, it certainly clunks a bit when you do this...
