Many thanks for your suggestion. Yes that's possible - at first I was sure it must be fuel, but on second thoughts while the starter motor is on it sounds fine, so it's maybe more likely something like this. Will investigate

Thanks for your replies! Yes I have disconnected the fuel pipe from the carb and used the lift pump until fuel comes through. Strangely the engine is actually firing normally but only so long as the starter motor is engaged. The moment I let go of the key it stops. Re the manual - thanks very...

I had a fuel tank leak and for the first time decided to do the work myself and replaced it for new. Rusted bolts a bit of a nightmare but in the end - success! However..... here's the problem.... it fires fine while the starter motor is engaged but then stops immediately it's released...
