That is very similar sounding to my 19j engine just before it died on me. Mine has dropped a valve. Quite unnerving hearing that noise again. Would be interested in the answer to this as I assume it is the same problem that caused the issues on my engine.

I look forward to sharing this vehicle with the forum once it is actually on the road! Both footwells are shot and mainly filler painted over with hammerite. The front crossmember has is held together with expanding foam. Supposedly welded for the last MOT!

Yes I don't blame the seller for the engine failure. I do blame them for the other incorrect descriptions and the fact that they were pretending to be a private seller. I have received the registration document and they were never the registered owner like they pretended to me. As I said earlier...

I have got some money off the "private seller" to help with repairs. Took a bit of persuasion and research on who he was but was agreeable in the end, so good result and I enjoying using the Mazda courtesy car whilst the engine is being changed!

I think it is more a case this guy deals cars on the side and feels that covers him as being a private seller. My research shows he is a bit of a rogue with history and I will do that research before buying next time.
I went to the garage to see progress earlier and pick up a courtesy car. The...

Hopefully get the Land Rover back by the end of this week. With a steep bill unfortunately as the seller is now refusing to help and with a little research I have found out he is a dealer feining to be a private seller. We live and learn I guess. Although I think I get Land Rover blindness and...

Verdict is it has dropped a valve stopping the engine rotating and breaking a piston.

No obvious leaks. Have sent it off to an independent Land Rover garage locally to have it checked out. i think from having a look today and seeing the amount of oil blown out that there is a problem with the cylinder head, head gasket and possibly a cracked piston. I await the result from the...

I am wondering whether a piston has broken. Gut feelin that is probably wrong

It was sold in good faith to me and the seller is willing to help out with costs incurred anyway. No need to fire things at the seller yet. He is a fellow enthusiast.
I can't see any obvious problems with the fuel lines or the return pipe
All seem good. I shall investigate further in daylight...

Yes the guy that sold it to me is being very reasonable as well and just wiping his hands!

Ok. When I bought it it was down to its last drops of fuel and was running fine until I filled up with fuel. Probably just a coincidence but made me run for the receipt to make sure I had put diesel in.

Hi. Went and bought a 90 last night. Checked it all out had a drive, all seemed good. About five miles down the road I could smell diesel, then it started banging and I pulled over and the engine cut out smoke was coming out of the engine vents, opened the bonnet and there were flames at the...
