Yup - that sounds like the problem. Unfortunately I don't know what the original battery was, but the new one is a Varta 80 Ah job which looks up to the job.

..just to say that the new battery seems to have fixed the electrics problem and the solenoid has resolved the surging problem, so I'm a happy chappie at present!

Well, it does look as though the turbo solenoid has fixed my particular surging problem - although I'll be keeping a close eye on it, all was well today at the speeds I previously saw the problem occur.

Oh no - that's three different solutions I've read for a surging problem! :doh:
Hope yours works well for you. I'm doing a longish run tomorrow so mine will get a test then and I'll report back.

Hey - that's good news!
I was about to get a can for myself, but the garage has now replaced the turbo boost control solenoid which they say caused the surging problem.
Have not tested this properly yet - will report back if any problems.

OK - have now got the car back - it's got a new battery which they say will solve the electrical problems. It was a bad battery from the start they reckon. Who knows; time will tell.
The surging they said was due to a faulty turbo boost control solenoid and not the EGR valve.
Have not tested...

I'm interested in your results too - I've had your surging problem on a nearly three year old Freelander 2, although mine was most noticeable at high speeds in 5th and 6th gear.

Just caught up with this thread having also done a web search. I bought a Freelander2 secondhand six months ago - it's now almost three years old - and as soon as the weather got cold, I started getting a whole series of electric problems and one night had a completely flat battery.
