Surely if the timing was so far out that the pistons were hitting the valves there would be starting problems, smoke and diesel knock, fault codes ?? I want to be sure before I strip it down again to check timing !

Defender 2.4 Puma TDCI New engine fitted and guess what? Hi After searching high and low for a 2.4 TDCI engine after ours died lasyt year with over 300K Km's we eventualy bit the bullet and bought a brand new one which was sent out to France with 4 new injectors etc. Timed new engine up...

Thanks for shareing ! This is what my fear is ! Totaly agree with you we also have TD5's, 200tdi's and 300tdi;s in the family far older and abused that are absolutely faultless !

No nearer with this ! Stripped engine from LR in France 6500 euro and full build with auxillarys 15000 euro !! lot of money for a crap engine ! whats the easiest alternative engine conversion ??

What’s it going to be that’s suffered ? Cams ? Worth doing ? Dilemma we have with a new stripped lump swapping everything over from a 300k lump :-(

Yeh ! We did think about an engine change ! TD5 etc …. I think it would be a shame to change the 2.4 puma lump because it is (was ) a good powerful lump !

Hi My lads 2007 Defender 2.4 tdci engine with 300K km's is dead ! He got oil pressure warning light , towed him home and dropped the sump to find the oil pump pick up filter blocked full of crap . Cleaned, new pump and sump but the damage has already been done makes a right racket from the top...

Sorted ! I took the injection pump timing cover off , Grabbed a 22mm socket and a 10mm socket and found a quite stretch of road . And then just kept slowly adjusting the timing slackening the 10mm bolts and turning the 22mm centre bolt , locking 10mm bolts up and driving until it stopped...

Any News ?? I have a similar problem with a 300tdi :-(

Still not sorted this ! Checked everything so was wondering if the injection pump is in the right position and the flywheel when I check the timing could it be the cam sprocket that is out 1 tooth either way ? Obviously can't check with out stripping down and if so I will change cambelt water...

Thanks for your input ;-) Yes fully serviced all oils and filters ! It’s had a few “Italian tunes” and apparently the cylinder head and valves are new so I don’t think it’s a valve and when you take the oil filler plug off there is absolutely no block pressure . I do think it’s not as sweet...
