Thanks B34R I have now found the problem. A cracked thermostat housing where it enters the area behind the coolant pump.

Is there a coolant pipe behind the water pump, and below the inlet manifold? I have the same problem, and it has been suggested that this pipe may have corroded through old coolant or incorrect balance of coolant/water ratio
