Yeh, pretty sure they're the right way round. The problem was happening before i replaced the sender unit. When i removed the fuel tank first time round i left the sender unit attached to the pipes, as the unions looked like they would snap (which they eventually did).

When it dies i check if fuel is coming out of the 10mm bleed screw on top of the fuel filter housing.
